As we gear up for another Florida legislative session, we’ve been meeting with key legislators to discuss the recently passed anchoring laws. Some are asking about the impact of the new laws on boaters. We need your help answering that question.
In addition to the letters, calls, and emails to the Governor, our veto campaign includes social media videos highlighting the amount of money boaters spend in Florida.
The Florida Legislature has passed a bill that is bad for boating! HB 481 closes additional key areas of Biscayne Bay to anchoring for even one night. It also negates the requirement that the State regulate anchoring by allowing municipalities in the most populous counties to designate their own anchoring laws. This will result in a patchwork of rules that are hard for well-meaning boaters to follow.
A bill (HB 481) that further restricts anchoring in Florida has passed the House and Senate and will soon be sent to the Governor. We are mounting a campaign to urge Governor DeSantis to veto this bill. Please join us for this important episode that explains the bill, why we oppose it, and how we will campaign for a veto.
Several pieces of anti-anchoring legislation are being heard in Florida this session. AGLCA and the other members of the Boaters' Rights Advocacy Coalition have been active in protecting your right to anchor in Florida's waterways. This episode gives details about the bills of concern and how you can help with our grassroots efforts and fundraising.
Two bills filed in Florida would further limit anchoring, and one bill would create free permits to anchor for more than 14 days. This week's podcast explains the history of the issue, gives the details of the bills, and shares why AGLCA supports one and opposes two. Most importantly, please help us fund our efforts on your behalf to protect anchoring in Florida by contributing at www.greatloop.org/advocacy.
Two bills have been filed in Florida that could substantially limit your ability to anchor in the state. To fight these effectively, we must retain a lobbyist in Florida. Our 2025 advocacy fundraising has collected just under $14,000 towards our $36,000 goal. These bills, and the potential for others like them, are why we need every member to contribute to our advocacy fund. If we don’t reach our goal, we can’t continue our efforts on your behalf.
We hope many of you enjoyed time on the water in 2024 and are looking forward to even more cruising in 2025. Before the 2025 cruising season gets going, it seems like a natural time to update our members on AGLCA’s current state of affairs, share last year’s Loop completion statistics, and take a look forward to what’s new for 2025. Enjoy!
It’s time once again for our annual appeal. We need our members to contribute to our advocacy fund! Our mission is simply stated, but widespread and far reaching. AGLCA’s advocacy efforts help keep the waterways of the Great Loop open and safe for navigation.
Join us as we discuss the recent issues at the Wilson Lock on the Tennessee River with Cline Jones, Executive Director of the Tennessee River Valley Association and the Tennessee-Cumberland Waterways Council. Cline provides information on past and current issues with this lock and why we should be concerned about similar problems that could happen throughout the nation's system of locks. We'll also explain the economic impact of locking delays on the commercial sector, and what Loopers can do to help get much needed lock maintenance and replacements funded.
