Welcome to AGLCA's Virtual Docktails where Loopers can connect on special interest topics! Each Zoom social breakout room will be hosted by a Gold Looper or a representative from AGLCA. The groups are intended to be interactive and fun with no structured agenda or presentations! For the April event, the breakout room topics are below.
Equipping Your Boat For the Loop
This Virtual Docktails group is designed to explore the variety of ways you can equip your boat for the Great Loop. From systems and navigation tools like AIS, to spare parts, and safety gear, we can discuss the practical decisions that make life on the water smoother. We can also touch on comfort and livability like your galley setup, kitchen appliances, storage solutions, and the little upgrades that make a big difference during long days aboard. Whether you’re just starting your search or fine-tuning an already capable boat, this conversation is meant to spark ideas, share experiences, and help you prepare for the journey ahead.
You Crossed Your Wake, Now What?
What does life look like once you hang the gold (or platinum) burgee? This Virtual Docktails group is designed to help members navigate a transition that can be just as challenging as planning the Loop itself. Whether you’re thinking about selling your boat, starting a new cruising adventure, or returning to life on land, this group can explore the wide range of paths Loopers take next. From navigating the boat sale process and timing the market, to redefining routines, finding community, and adjusting to “dirt life,” this conversation is meant to be open, honest, and encouraging. No matter where you are in your journey, this group offers a space to share experiences, ask questions, and discover what comes after the Loop.
Buddy Boating
One of the most frequently-asked-questions that we receive is how to get matched up with a buddy boat? While we wish we could alleviate some of the pre-Loop concerns, the bottom line is that the buddy boat system naturally occurs in the wild: at marinas, AGLCA events, and even sometimes in locks along the way. This Virtual Docktails group will explore best practices for buddy boating and answer all your questions about how these connections come together. Join us if you’re curious about what a buddy boat really is, looking for tips on how to find one, or if you have advice and stories to share from your own experience on the Loop.
Off-Gridding Your Boat
How important is it to “off-grid” your boat for the Great Loop? This Virtual Docktails group will explore the growing trend of adding solar panels, lithium batteries, water makers, and other upgrades designed to increase independence on the water, but also ask the bigger question: do you actually need them for the Loop? We can discuss the real-world pros and cons, costs vs. benefits, and how different cruising styles impact these decisions. Some Loopers go all-in on off-grid capability, while others comfortably complete the journey relying on marinas and shore power. Join us for this Virtual Docktails to discuss what’s worth it, what’s not, and how to strike the right balance for your adventure.
Looping on a Budget
Can you do the Great Loop without breaking the bank? This Virtual Docktails group is all about exploring what it really looks like to Loop on a budget. From choosing the right boat and managing fuel costs, to finding affordable dockage, anchoring strategies, and handling day-to-day expenses, we can discuss all the practical ways to make the adventure more financially approachable. We can also talk about where it makes sense to spend, and where you can save, based on real Looper experiences. Please join us, whether you’re planning your trip, already underway, or just curious about the true cost of the Loop. Share ideas, ask questions, and learn how to make your dream trip work within your budget!
Rendezvous Meet and Greet
Getting ready for the Spring Rendezvous? This exclusive Virtual Docktails group is open to registered attendees and is hosted by Kim Russo. It’s a great opportunity to connect with fellow participants ahead of the May event, put some faces to names, and start building those Looper friendships early. Bring your questions, excitement, and curiosity! Kim will be there to share insights, answer questions, and help you make the most of your Rendezvous experience. Whether it’s your first event or you’re a seasoned attendee, this is a fun and relaxed way to kick things off before we gather in person.
During the registration process, you will inidicate which breakout room you plan to attend but you will also be able to move to another breakout room during the event if you choose to do so.
Registration closes on Wednesday, April 15th at noon eastern.
