History/About

Since 1961, Willard has been the original offshore displacement trawler yacht. Willard was the first production builder of Fiberglas yachts before Grand Banks, Krogan or any others. Willards are known for solid, no nonsense full displacement cruising yachts.

The Willard 36 was designed by Bill Garden and introduced in 1961. Production ran until 1970. 39 hulls were produced during these 9 years with hull numbers 1-40. Hull number 13 was not used. The series included a Standard Sedan style
“Custom Cruiser” (28 built) with flybridge, a North Sea inspired aft pilothouse model (6 built), a motor sailor version and one full sailing version.

Original Vega 36 plans drawn by William Garden (his design 437) are in the collection at Mystic Seaport Museum, catalog #96355 – Design 437 and copies may be purchased through them.

Hull numbers 1 – 25 were built by Vega Marine Corporation and marketed as Vega 36 with actual construction by Willard Marine. Hulls 26+ were built by Willard and sold as Willard Vega 36.

Description

Cockpit: The cockpit is unusually large and provides an easy entry landing for gaining access to the salon. There is an access boarding door on the starboard side which provides easy entry alongside a floating pier. On the port side of the cockpit is a teak step ladder leading to the boat deck. There is also an Ice Maker/ Freezer (currently INOP, needs a new thermostat). A full length athwartship bench seat is just forward of the lazarette. The Wagner T-Model chain steering and electric drive motor are in the lazarette also the emergency tiller is fitted on the bulkhead. Above the lazarette and behind the seatback are 3 storage lockers for extra lines, cleaning supplies and electrical plugs. The shore power electric inlet (Smart plug) is on the starboard side near the boarding door. A hatch in the middle of the cockpit leads to the space under the cockpit where the 2 water
tanks are located. The Northern Lights generator sits between the water tanks. The Fluxgate compass and ComNav Autopilot are mounted on the aft bulkhead.

Salon: A teak double door leads into the Salon. The galley is on the starboard side. A wet locker/storage locker is just inside the entry doors. There is a 3-burner propane stove and oven, a single sink and Norcold refrigerator/freezer. A dinette is on the port side which can convert to 73” X 32” Bunk. The dinette seats provide vast amount of storage space. Just aft of the dinette is a Microwave. The Mermaid Air Conditioning at the bottom of the cabinet, also the !20 AC Panel is located there as well. Forward of the dinette is the lower steering station and DC panel.

Stateroom: Down 3 steps from the Salon on the port side are the bunks. The lower bunk is a double while the upper bunk is a single. Both bunks have custom made mattresses by Handmade Mattress Corporation (HMC). A Bookcase and shelves are on the starboard side as well as a small desk with drawer.

Head: The head is just forward with sink and vanity to port with lots of storage. To starboard are more storage shelves for spare parts, towels etc. The Bosun’s locker is forward above the chain locker.

Boat Deck: The boat deck extends from the flybridge aft to the stern. A 10-foot Bullfrog tender may be launched either to port or starboard using the boom and Warn electric hoist. The fake smoke stack (a Willard 36 Cruiser feature) provides a convenient storage spot for lifejackets, extra lines, and tender items.

Flybridge: The flybridge has a hard top and a full enclosure. The cushioned bench seat provides comfortable seating for 2 and a great deal of storage beneath the seat. Two radios, Furuno radar and other navigational electronics are on the dashboard. Note: The Interphase Matrix depth sounder is inoperative due to a burned-out LCD screen.

Exclusions: Owner’s personal items and tools also the Chelsea Clock and Barometer. Kitchen items such as utensils, knives, cooking utensils and dinner ware convey.

So why am I selling?

The simple answer is age. I can no longer properly care for "Victoria"; I have owned "Victoria" since 1998, 27 years, made many upgrades – i.e. new Salon windows, new port lights in head and stateroom, a fire supersession system in the engine room, total main engine rebuild, new head, many water pump replacements, flybridge canvas, flybridge hardtop, and more. Mechanically "Victoria" is nearly 100% ready to start the Great Loop tomorrow. Cosmetically she is a bit challenged, at least by my standards. For example, the teak cap rail which I always maintained yearly needs work and a few other areas need repainting. Of course, new galley appliances would be nice but not necessary. "Victoria" was painted in the early 1990s by the previous owner; the hull paint is in good shape but a couple spots on the deckhouse need a little attention.
