She is a steel trawler, built by Kristen Yachts of British Columbia, Canada, a manufacturer of blue water sailboats and trawler yachts. She was designed by renowned naval architect, Greg Marshall. She has various features including a get-home hydraulic power takeoff from the generator with separate shaft, active fin stabilization, hydraulic bow & stern thrusters, diesel heating, air conditioning, and fuel consumption of under 3 gallons per hour at cruising speed.
Vahevala is outfitted for long-range adventuring! While we occasionally stay in marinas, our norm was to be anchored or moored for days, even weeks, at a time. Her four large solar panels, 600 Amp/Hour house battery bank and Northern Lights 16KW generator provide ample power for off-the-grid living. Make 60 gallons of water per hour with the Horizon water maker. Stock up the two large fridge/freezers, huge pantry and skip the grocery store for weeks at a time.With 1,000 gallons of fuel capacity and the reliable Isuzu diesel engine, you can go over 2,000 miles without having to buy fuel. Our average fuel burn is less than 3 gph at 7mph.
This is a true, blue water passage maker that has been meticulously maintained. Vahevala can easily handle seas greater than most owners would want to attempt. She has traveled from the shipyard in British Columbia to Alaska, south through the Panama Canal, all over the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and all through the eastern Caribbean from Saint Maarten to Grenada. In 2024, her current owners completed the Down East Loop, which is a 3,000 mile journey up the Hudson river, through the western Erie Canal to Lake Ontario and onward all the way east on the St. Lawrence Seaway through the Canadian Maritimes, and back to NYC. Her all-steel construction and fully-protected propeller and rudder provide a level of safety and peace of mind you just can't get with a fiberglass boat.

Mechanical Equipment
Whoever does the maintenance on this boat will love the pristine engine room. A 6' 1" person can stand fully upright in the engine room where the workbench and built-in Craftsman tool
chests are, and has only to bend over to get to most of the rest of it. Both sides of the engine are easily accessible, as is the serviceable side of the generator, air conditioning units, watermaker, sea chest, sea strainers, and the fuel system. New LED lighting.
The main engine is an Isuzu industrial diesel. It has only 6,000 hours and has been professionally maintained. We run it at 1,600 RPM, very near the peak of the fuel economy curve provided by Isuzu, and average 7.2 mph, burning under 3 gph. Dedicated 24V battery bank (2 x 12V) for main engine starting. 24V alternator for the starting batteries.
The main engine has a Rexroth (2022) power take-off hydraulic pump that provides power for the Wesmar stabilizers, the bow and stern thrusters, the Maxwell 3500 windlass, and the Steelhead 1500 crane. The generator also has a power take-off that is enabled with an electric clutch, so it draws power only when you need it. We often use just the generator to lift the dinghy on and off. In any docking situation with a lot of wind and/or current, we start the generator and add all of its hydraulic power to the main engine's, so that both thrusters have maximum power.
*Balmar 250 amp alternator (2025) for charging the house batteries, controlled by a Balmar MC618 external programmable regulator (2024) with read out at upper helm so you always have information on your state of charge while underway.

*Generator has an Eaton power take-off (hydraulic pump) that powers any and all hydraulic equipment, separately and in tandem with the main engine's power take-off.
*Generator and its power take-off also power a hydraulic motor that turns a 17" diameter Max-Prop in case the main engine is ever not available. The combination will move the boat, although slowly.
*Oil change pump for main engine and generator.
*Three Aqua-Air KHT-16C 16,000 BTU split-gas air conditioning units with air handlers in each cabin, the galley, and the salon.
