Rendezvous Other Info

More than 20 seminars are included with your Rendezvous registration!  The Spring Rendezvous has two seminar tracks--The Route Track and the Looping 101 Track.  We're pleased to welcome back some favorite speakers and introduce you to a few new ones we think you'll like.  And as always, there are lots of opportunities to socialize with three lunches, two dinners, two receptions, and three Looper Crawls included with your registration.  Don't forget to check out the new pre-Rendezvous and post-Rendezvous optional add-on seminars described below.

The Looping 101 Track agenda will be developed based on your feedback!  About a week after registration opens, we'll poll those who have already registered to see what topics they'd most like to hear about during the Looping 101 track and use the information gathered to set the agenda.

You are free to choose which track you want to attend at the start of every session.  There is no need to sign up ahead of time for specific seminars.

The Route Track Sessions are as follows:

-Chesapeake Bay through Great Kills, NY - Foster Schucker & Susan Wilson

-New York City to Trenton, ON - Dave Fuller

-The Trent Severn & Rideau Canals - Chad Buchner

-Georgian Bay - Robin McKeown

-Wisconsin Side of Lake Michigan - Jim Donnelly

-Michigan Side of Lake Michigan - Ben & Laura Stein

-Illinois Waterway to the Tenn-Tom - Joe Pica

To accommodate all of the expected Loopers who will come by boat, we have two "official" Marinas, Waterside Marina in Norfolk and Tidewater Yacht Marina across the river in Portsmouth.

Waterside Marina is in the middle of the action at the Waterside District, which features live (and sometimes loud and late) entertainment and several dining choices.  It's also a short walk from there to the meeting facility.  We'll be holding two Looper Crawls at Waterside Marina.  Rates at Waterside for our group are discounted to $1.55 per foot + $5 per day for 30 Amp or $15 per day for 50 Amp.

Tidewater Yacht Marina is a quieter option in the quaint town of Portsmouth. It is a short walk from there to the North Landing ferry stop, and then a short and inexpensive ferry ride to the meeting site. We'll be holding one Looper Crawl at Tidewater Yacht Marina.  Rates at Tidewater for our group are $1/ft plus utilities.

Slip Reservation instructions: You will not be able to book a slip at Waterside Marina nor Tidewater Yacht Marina until you have registered for the Rendezvous.  During registration, you will be asked which marina you'd prefer and details about your boat.  AGLCA will collect that information and forward it to the marinas.  The marina staff will then call you to confirm.  Please be sure to follow this process to help us ensure registration goes smoothly.  The marinas will not accept your registration unless you are on AGLCA's registration list.

The host hotel and the site of all the seminars and meals is once again the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside which is a very short walk from Waterside Marina and the Waterside ferry stop.  A room block has been arranged with a group rate of $129 to $144 per night.  Parking is an additional $10 per night.

Click here to reserve a room in our block.

The room block closes at 5:00 p.m. eastern time on April 12th, so please don't wait to book your room.

**Rooms are not available at the Sheraton for Saturday night, May 2, due to a city-wide event happening that evening. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Always a highlight of the Rendezvous, Looper Crawls take place in the afternoons when the activity moves from the meeting rooms to the docks.  Many of your fellow Loopers who are tied up at the marina will open their boats for others to tour.  It's a great opportunity to see many different Loop-capable boats in one place and get some great ideas for features you'd like to see in your own boat, if you're in the market.  It's also a fun social time!

Looper Crawls are scheduled as follows
  • Monday, May 4th from 3:30pm - 5:30pm at Waterside Marina
  • Tuesday, May 5th from 3:30pm - 5:30 pm at Tidewater Yacht Marina
  • Wednesday, May 6th from 3:30pm - 5:30pm at Waterside Marina

We do not yet know whether we will be able to offer members the option of purchasing tickets for the Looper Crawls without full Rendezvous registration.  This will be determined after registration has been open and we have a better idea for how big of a crowd we will be expecting.

We have a few new and exciting pre/post-Rendezvous events to share with you!  Most require pre-registration, so read on and plan to add the one(s) you want to attend when you register for the Rendezvous.

About Boating Safety - Fee: $40, limited to 50 attendees, pre-registration required

Sunday, May 3rd from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  (lunch is included)

Join us as the local Norfolk Coast Guard Auxiliary presents About Boating Safety.  Topics include: boating laws, safety equipment, navigation, how to boat safely and what to do if you have problems on the water.  This beginners' boating course is NASBLA approved, so the Safe Boating card you will receive at the seminar's conclusion will meet the requirements in the few states along the Loop where those operating a vessel must  have taken a NASBLA approved course. Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course.

Pre-Rendezvous Down East Loop Full-Day Seminar - Fee: $125, Registration is required
Sunday, May 3rd 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
**Registration opens for Rendezvous attendees on February 10th, and opens to those not attending the Rendezvous on February 17th**
The Down East Loop is becoming more and more popular with Loopers. Whether you have completed the Great Loop and are in search for another adventure, or your Loop is delayed by the Illinois Waterway lock closures, the Down East Loop may be for you! Sessions will be presented by AGLCA members Dave & Claudia Fuller, Mark & Denise Gillespie, and Vicki McGahee. Click here for all the details.

Bike Building for a Local Children's Charity - Free, but registration is required
Sunday, May 3rd, 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Join your fellow Loopers as we assemble bikes for children in need.  Curtis Stokes & Associates is sponsoring and planning this activity, and they'll be providing the bike kits.  Groups of Loopers will build the bikes and then the children will arrive to pick up their new wheels! A bit of Great Loop Trivia will even be thrown in!

Introduction to the Great Loop - No pre-registration required
Monday, May 4th, 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

This session will be presented by AGLCA's Director, Kim Russo, just before the "official" start to the Rendezvous.  All Rendezvous registrants are welcomed to attend. No pre-registration is required.  If you're already on the Loop, or if you've attended a Looper Lifestyle seminar or one of Kim's seminars at a boat show or TrawlerFest, this content may be a repeat of what you've already seen.  The seminar will include answers to frequently asked questions about the Great Loop, Great Loop stats, and an overview of the route through pictures submitted by Loopers.

Post-Rendezvous Marine Electronics Full-Day Seminar - Fee: $175, Registration is required
Friday, May 8th, 8:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
**Registration opens to Rendezvous attendees on February 10th ~ opens to those not attending the Rendezvous on February 17th**

Many of you have asked for a more in-depth look at marine electronics and we are making it happen in Norfolk. Join one of our highest rated speakers, Gold Looper and Panbo.com editor & publisher, Ben Stein, for a deeper dive into electronics on the Great Loop. Learn more about outfitting your Loop boat with newly installed electronics, what safety equipment you need for the Great Loop, helpful mobile apps, Internet connectivity and more!
